US President Barack Obama is welcomed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy on June 6, 2009 at the Caen Prefecture. Obama joins the leaders of Britain and France and hundreds of World War II veterans Saturday to mark the 65th anniversary of D-Day the beaches of Normandy. As star guest of the commemorations, Obama is to deliver a speech before 9,000 people including 200 US D-Day veterans at a clifftop graveyard in northern France which has become a symbol of America's sacrifice for Europe's freedom.

On a superficial level, I actually think Carla has way more grace than Michelle. Especially the way she carries herself and walks. Although I like Michelle and everything, she sometimes walks like a football player.

Actually, when I was referring to grace, I was referring to the tawdriness of Bruni's relationship with Sarkozy. Of course, Sarkozy is a shallow and fickle guy, so tawdry comes along with him.

Well, Carla grew up like royalty. She had the means to go to all those classes that little rich girls go to to learn certain etiquette. Also, she's a model. Michelle, grew up on the SOUTH SIDE of Chicago, parents made relatively modest salaries. So, yes, she may walk like a 'football player' but doesn't make her inferior to Mrs. Sarkozy.

Yes I know this, that is why I prefaced my statement by saying, "On a superficial level". I was not comparing them based on intellect, intelligence or anything of importance. Obviously with Michelle being a Harvard educated lawyer, I would have no reason to think that she would be inferior to Carla just because she doesn't seem graceful to me.

It's very weird--have their ever been friendships like this built on the international stage? The Sarkozys and the Obamas seem to have genuine camaraderie. I feel like Carla Bruni and Michelle Obama are on the verge of exchange BFF bracelets.

Was their anything comparable under Clinton or Bush?

i'll agree if it weren't for the whispers that sarkozy has a different opinion in private -- during g20 summit, he was telling people he thought obama was "not up to standard" (aqui es la link)

but he knows obama is popular, likable, and a spotlight draw. he's been slipping in the national polls (38% approval in May though stable now at 43%) so like a sponge ...

his wife is lovely though

Really? Their relationship doesn't look like its reciprocal at all. It's like Sarkozy is so eager to be seen with the "cool guy" and Obama is like "...yeah whatever." Plus every now and then Sarkozy makes some comment about Obama that would appear like he doesn't like him but then when they meet Sarkozy tries to make the media think they are like good friends or something.

Yeah, exactly. In fact, Sarkozy notoriously talked a bit of brow-raising smack about Obama less than 2 weeks after the G-20 Summit.

So yeah, I see Sarkozy's hyper-gushing from today as damage control, so to speak -- to ease whatever awkwardness would result from having to meet a dude one talked smack about less than 2 months ago. :)

Yeah, I've basically just been under the impression that Sarkozy is trying to gain some popularity by looking like he's liked by the popular president...but then behind closed doors with his cabinet and whatnot, he says terrible things. He seems very two-faced.

I agree, Phoenixdown7. I think Carla Bruni-Sarkozy seems to be smitten with our prez, pretty much the way many women are today--perhaps even more. And I think he knows it; that's why he seems to keep his distance. Notice in the pic where the two of them exchange kisses on the cheek. He seems to be holding back. It's probably a good thing that he does hold back. I think Carla wants to do with Barack what she did with Mick Jagger before she married Sarkozy (Me thinks Michelle should keep her eye on Carla). LOL.

I dislike the large belts cause it emphasizes that she tends to be short waisted and it cuts up an otherwise fine form.Dress according to your body type should be the rule of thumb. I must say though she has come a long way from the outre outfits where she was being a little too different for the FLOTUS. Classic is best. Pictures age in time and it is best to be elegant.
